  • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter Cut into 6 pieces and at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream At room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Preparation

  • Gather your tools: Start with a medium heavy-duty stainless steel saucepan.
  • Pour the granulated sugar into your saucepan and place it over medium heat. Stir constantly until melted, about 6 minutes.
  • Once sugar is melted and amber-colored, lower the heat and stir in the butter carefully.
  • Keep stirring until the butter is completely melted. If clumping occurs, whisk vigorously.
  • Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring continuously. Let the mixture boil for 1 minute.
  • Stir in the salt and let the caramel cool slightly.

Storage

  • Cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
  • Reheat in the microwave or on the stove before use as it will solidify in the fridge.

Notes

For variety, try chocolate salted caramel by adding cocoa powder or infuse with flavors like vanilla or coffee. Use a heavy pan for even heating.
