  • 6 ounces pineapple juice
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 to 2 drops red food coloring (optional) Adjust color as desired.

Preparation

  • Whisk together the pineapple juice, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and light brown sugar in a small saucepan.
  • Heat the sauce over medium heat until it comes to a simmer, ensuring all the ingredients are well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, stir together the cornstarch and water to make a slurry. Pour this slurry into the simmering sauce, whisking until the sauce thickens.
  • If desired, adjust the color by adding a drop of red food coloring.
  • Remove the sauce from heat.

Notes

Taste as you go to find the right balance between sweet and sour. For a thicker sauce, add more cornstarch slurry. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze in portions for up to three months. Reheat before serving.
